October 08 | A77 Road Closures and Diversions
A series of improvements is scheduled to begin during late October for necessary upgrade works on the A77.  Amey, working on behalf of Transport Scotland, is advising all road users to be aware of the diversions and closures in place during this time.

SHALLOCH PARK - FROM FRIDAY 24 OCTOBER

The A77 south of Girvan, at Shalloch Park will be closed during the weekend of Friday 24 October beginning at 9pm, finishing on the evening of Sunday 26 October.  Due to the narrowness of the road it must be completely closed to allow site personnel to work safely.  A full closure will be in place with a clearly signed diversion via the A714, A75 and A751 in operation while the work is carried out.

This particular stretch of the A77 carries over 2,500 vehicles daily with 16% being HGVs. Amey have liaised closely with Strathclyde Police and South Ayrshire Council to programme the works.  As the A77 is the main arterial route for traffic travelling to Stranraer for trips to and from Ireland, P&O and Stenna Line were consulted.

BELLFIELD INTERCHANGE - FROM SUNDAY 26 OCTOBER

Carriageway reconstruction will take place on the A77 at Bellfield Interchange near Kilmarnock beginning Sunday 26 October. The project is expected to finish on Thursday 30 October (weather permitting).

Amey, who manage the A77 on behalf of Transport Scotland say this area of the A77, known as the Kilmarnock Bypass, was opened in 1973 and now requires significant repair.

In the interests of safety for the public and workers involved, traffic will travel in a contra flow using the northbound carriageway.  The southbound on ramp from Bellfield Interchange will close for the duration of the work.    Traffic will be diverted via Grassyards Interchange turning onto the A77 southbound where drivers will be diverted through the contra flow.

Mike Robin, network area manager for Amey in south west Scotland explained:

"Both of these locations on the A77 now require significant repair to maintain the standards expected across the roads network as they have become worn over time.  Work at Shalloch Park has been programmed during a weekend to minimise any disruption.  The diversion route in place is quite lengthy as there are limited alternative roads available in the area and we urge anyone using this route to consider their travel plans carefully."

Amey urge drivers to take a 'Cone Sense, Common Sense' approach to roadworks:
  • Keep to the speed limit, it has been implemented for not just your safety but the workforce's too - speeding vehicles are a serious threat to staff
  • Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks
  • Be alert for roadworks traffic and personnel leaving or entering the safety managed roadworks site
  • Keep a safe distance - there could be queues in front
  • Observe all signs - they are there to help you
  • Get into the correct lane in good time - don't keep switching
