 September 08 | £11m safety improvement scheme
A vital improvement project that will boost safety on one of Ayrshire's key routes, the A77, has taken a significant step forward.

The £11m A77 Symington and Bogend Toll fly-over scheme has reached the next stage of the statutory process today with the publication of the Draft Compulsory Purchase Order, the Draft Supplementary Road Orders and the Environmental Statement Addendum. The formal consultation period for these orders will last for 7 weeks, starting from 23 September 2008.

The publication of these orders follows on from the Draft Road Orders and the Environmental Statement published in January 2007 and continued discussions with the relevant organisations, landowners and members of the public. Transport Scotland has carried out a number of minor amendments to the Scheme presented in January 2007 to resolve any outstanding issues with the project which have been raised during the initial consultation period.

Ewan Borthwick, Transport Scotland's Project Manager said: "We realise this is an important scheme for Ayrshire communities and are pleased that we are moving forward through the statutory process following revisions to the Scheme.

"We are committed to delivering this scheme that will invest £11m into the Ayrshire network to improve safety. Local people can formally have their say on this project, through our statutory consultation."

This scheme also involves the closure of the central reserve gaps to improve safety along the route by prevent turning manoeuvres along a  4.5 mile (7.3km) section of the route

The A77 carries approximately 34000 vehicles a day through this stretch and is not only a key link for Ayrshire communities but provides connections to and from Glasgow and further west via the M77.

The consultation will close on 14 November 2008. Work is expected to begin on the Scheme in 2010 with the construction phase lasting approximately 12 months.
