October 07 | A77 SAFETY GROUP REINFORCES MESSAGE THROUGH HARD H

The A77 Safety Group is appealing to young drivers to think about their behaviour through a hard-hitting video they have added to their website. The video, which features interviews with real people who have dealt with crashes on the A77, is part of the Group's continued efforts to educate drivers.

The addition of the video follows on from the Young Driver Summit, led by the Association of Chief Police Officers, which took place in Perth on 6 September, and which addressed concerns about the high number of young drivers killed in road accidents during the first half of 2007.

The dedicated website www.a77safetygroup.co.uk focuses on road safety on the A77, providing drivers of all ages, from Ayrshire and beyond, with an innovative resource for using this busy trunk road.

The website has a real focus on keeping local people on the move safely and this new video demonstrates just how deeply a crash can affect those involved, from the victims and their families through to the emergency services attending the scene.

A spokesperson for the A77 Safety Group explained:

"Since our re-launch last autumn, we've continually looked at safety initiatives on the A77 and followed our mission statement 'engineering, education, encouragement and enforcement.

"Road users can see the tangible engineering developments we deliver through road projects and how we have used the SPECS system successfully but drivers need to play their part in making the A77 safer too. That is why we see this video as a real part of our 'encouragement and education' - we want young people to learn and understand why it's so important to take care behind the wheel.  It should be remembered that a crash involving a young death can be a life sentence for relatives and friends."
